Insurance leaders know their organization is ready for AI when they can connect a specific business goal to reliable data, accountable governance, capable employees, and a workable delivery plan. Leaders should not assume they are ready upon simply purchasing a tool or completing a pilot. Readiness requires business, operations, and technology teams to agree on what AI should accomplish and how its results will be checked.

At Digital Insurance 2026, Fernando Macias, Director, Digital Experience at Pan-American Life Insurance Group, emphasized the organizational work behind that readiness: "We needed to have the right structure to execute." He described using separate teams for identifying valuable AI opportunities and evaluating proposed uses, supported by executive involvement and targeted technical expertise. His experience underscores that enthusiasm needs clear responsibilities and delivery capacity before it can become operational progress.

Another recent conference conversation distinguished data that is clean at its source from data that is suitable for a particular decision at the point of use. That distinction matters for readiness: leaders need to understand whether the information reaching an AI tool includes the context, permissions, and quality controls its intended task requires.

CIOs, CDOs, COOs, and transformation leaders should begin with a limited workflow. Define its intended outcome, assign business and technical owners, and assess the data and skills it needs. Establish how employees will verify outputs and how the organization will monitor performance, then resolve clear issues before expanding implementation. This makes readiness a concrete assessment of operating capability rather than a general statement of ambition.

Join the upcoming Digital Insurance Summit to compare how insurance leaders are building the data foundations, governance, and organizational capabilities needed to put AI into practice.
